Especially for the US market, a supplementary checklist to IFS Food was developed for the protection of food stuffs. This list takes into account the requirements of US legislation 107-188 PUBLIC HEALTH SECURITY AND BIOTERRORISM PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE ACT of 2002, which is designed to protect the public's safety.
Food Defense provides manufacturers with an opportunity to not only give evidence of their competence in respect of food safety and quality. It also includes 14 additional requirements for the protection of food for human consumption, addressing items from categories such as security assessment, site safety, personnel and visitors, as well as external inspections. With the Food Defense Checklist, organizations are able to demonstrate that they have taken all the measures necessary to protect their products, facilities, and buildings.
This checklist is not mandatory, but should be seen as a supplement of IFS Food. Once an organization has committed themselves to living up to its requirements, though, they need to be fulfilled the same as the other IFS requirements for foodstuffs.
